Access for Disabled Women
In January 2020, Healthwatch
North Lincolnshire embarked on a
mission to tackle disparities in
cervical screening access faced by
disabled women. Through focus
groups, interviews and surveys,
they identified several key barriers
hindering access to these lifesaving services: the absence of
hoists in GP practices, inaccessible
information, and instances of
women being removed from
screening registers.
A number of specific
recommendations were made to
GP practices, the Integrated Care
Board (ICB) and the local public
health team, which lead to the
allocation of resources to increase
cervical screening uptake in
practices located in areas of low
uptake.
As a result, a clinic with a hoist has
now been made available in the
Ironstone Centre in Scunthorpe,
and the ICB primary care team
continue to ensure practices are
promoting this service.
Communication protocols and
oversight mechanisms have also
been put in place to ensure
women are not removed from
screening registers.
